CHARACTERS
TEAM: Contains 14 girl players that are like a family and are dressed in shorts and pinnies with shin guards, goggles, and sticks. They age from freshman to seniors in high school.
CAPTAIN ELLA: She is a Junior and has been captain the past three years. She has long blonde hair that is always up in a ponytail. She is very dedicated and is considered the mom of the team.
COACH TYLER: He is new to america he was brought over from England to coach the girls. He has dark hair and is very fit. He is in his late 20’s. Very dedicated and is very knowledgeable about the sport. He is very likable but a hard coach.
ACT ONE
Scene 1
A stage in a field theater, there sits the
team of girls for field hockey on the right side of
the stage looking to the center of the stage
where their coaches casket is being lowed
into the ground.
TEAM
(Crying) We just want to thank you for everything you have done for our team and the past field hockey seasons and all future ones won’t be the same without you screaming from the sideline cheering us on, and always being there for us when we needed it the most. We love you.
END OF ACT ONE
Practices resume and stage sets up
on the practice field. The girls
having no energy and no reason to practice
just sit in a circle in the middle of the stage. New
Head coach starts to walk up and prepares to
introduce himself.
COACH TYLER
Hey ladies, I know time is rough and all but we still have a full season ahead of us so I would really appreciate it if everyone gave their very best and worked hard. We are going to make it to playoffs this year right?!
CAPTAIN ELLA
Ya! Girls he’s right, I know we are sad but we can’t just sit around and do nothing. We have playoffs to make, let’s do this for coach ! Are you guys in?
(Team just sits there with sadness going down their faces)
END OF SCENE 2
Practice field turns into Game field on stage and
the girls prepare for their first game without coach.
all of their moods are still down and no effort
has been being shown.
COACH TYLER
Okay ladies, let’s turn those frowns upside down and win this game, do it for your coach! I want you all to go out their and play your best.
TEAM
Why should we even bother, nothing is that same anymore, we might as well just forfeit.
COACH TYLER
NO WAY! Lets change our attitudes and win this game!
(Team just walks onto the field ready to play, with no change in their sad, no effort attitude)
Game starts to begin, and Captain Ella and Coach
Begin yelling and trying to boost their moods.
CAPTAIN ELLA
RUN LADIES!! Don’t give up already, the game just started.
The game is almost to an end and the team has
already given up.
TEAM
Just give up coach, it’s not gonna happen, none of us want to be here…
(Lights dim out)
END OF SCENE 3
The next couple days seem to go the
same until moment of clarity hits them, the final game
is in one day and they finally start to come together as a team.
COACH TYLER
OK girls come in.(Pause) I understand you guys don’t want to be her and have pretty much given up completely but tomorrow is the last game of your season, and they are a beatable team. Believe me I get it, it’s hard to continue playing when you feel there’s no reason too. But if your coach was still here what do you think he would say about this season. You girls have better in you. If you guys aren’t going to do it for yourself or me please do it for the memory of your coach. That’s all I’m asking. If you go out and play to your best then win or lose I will see this season as a true comeback.
CAPTAIN ELLA
I know I sound like a broken record but come on guys next year most of us will be gone and might not ever play again. So I’m asking you to take in what coach said and come to the game tomorrow with a different attitude and ready to give it your all. Practice is done. Go home and think some things over.
TEAM
I guess you guys are right, if coach was here she wouldn’t want us to be all sad, she would want us to do our best and do it for her. THAT’S IT, we are winning playoffs and we are going to work together to do this for coach!!
END OF SCENE 4
It was game day, and this
wasn’t just an ordinary game, it was
the game that decided if they were
going to playoffs. The coach hopes
to see a change in all of their attitudes.
COACH TYLER
ALRIGHT LADIES! Remember everything I told you, if you guys all work as a team and believe in yourselves you guys can do this. Push yourselves and go out and kick butt.
CAPTAIN ELLA
YES! We have all worked so hard and changed our moods toward this season, now lets so everyone what we have been working on.
TEAM
COMEBACK SEASON IS HERE! And playoffs here we come.
(Team starts to gather their equipment and makes their way onto the field)
The game is almost over, there are
30 seconds left with a tie score of
1 to 1. Who will win? That is what is
going through everyone’s mind.
COACH TYLER
RUN! HIT THE BALL ON GOAL! THERE’S ONLY 30 SECONDS LEFT!!!!!
With time only left for one play
Captain Ella brings the ball up the field
and passes it off to one of the
other girls and she drives it in and goes
in right as the timer hits zero.
CAPTAIN ELLA
OMG YES WE DID IT!!!!!
The girls all get into a big circle
and start jumping up and down
staring at the final score
that showed they won the
state championships. 2-1.
Coach Tyler runs out onto the
field to celebrate with them.
TEAM
YES! I knew we could do this! Playoffs here we come, you better watch out because Hartland field hockey is back in business
(Team huddles up and gives a big group hug, as the lights start to dim out)
